I think you've hit the nail on the head there! This is it, what I've made here, as far as social networks go. Plently of great free biking info all over the web, but little in the way of biking networks and groups. I'd love to see the niche filled with groups formed on this site. (Hmmm, did I turn that feature off... there fixed...)
Please try it, and I recently heard of a good way to tie into Facebook, so I might try to set that up too. Make a group for your town or city and invite people to join. I think groups can set their own privacy levels and stuff too, but so far Unpollute's 51 member total doesn't really call for much in the way of focused groups, but city groups sound reasonable for in the future.
Was joining this site an issue? I just wondered if that process worked smoothly for you...
Can you tell me what exactly led you here?
I'm going to go on a search for sites and groups like you asked about and post links to them shortly, but ya it's mostly "green" groups out there... I do believe I have a few in a list around here somewhere of a few worthy sites.
Alright, have a nice day!

I really appreciate your thoughful response. I do think that focusing on a sense of community will be a great boon to the site, and I've been making some minor wording changes to a few of my messages to soften the emotional tone and make Unpollute a bit more inviting... so that we can build a community or communities here. I remember now, that originally I thought making a few groups based on common interest (biking, or skating, or electric cars) would be great for the site, but I changed my mind when spending time on other ning sites helped me to notice that groups just segrigated people and the information that posted from the rest of the members in the site. That's probably more useful when the site is either huge, or being used by some existing group to privately share info/posts/pics (groups have some controls, in fact the platform has more controls and settings than I've even had a chance to get to know...) That's why I had taken groups off, I didn't want to see a member's efforts go into a group, only to have that content be difficult to access but other users, etc.
I'd have to agree, also, that while most cyclists are very friendly, that it is a slightly less social activity than running. But it's dangerous to generalize like that too much. Some very social bikers might get upset!
Please let me know more of your thoughts, and meanwhile I do hope you get to enjoy some nice bike rides! -peace, e
